SimCity 5

SimCity 5 has players take on the role of mayor and urban planner to grow a city facing many challenges, particularly environmental sustainability.

simcity-5

Play SimCity 5

Players have the challenge of being mayor whose main responsibility as urban planner is to create a city which will either become environmentally friendly, with emphasis on improving quality-of-life (QOL) and environmental sustainability, or end up becoming an industrial wasteland city with air and ground pollution, ecosystem environmental degradation and a sick or dying population of Sims. The mayor has the ultimate decision to decide the fate of the city and experience the cause and effect relationship of the interface between the infrastructure systems as the city develops. The nature of SimCity 5 will steer players towards a sustainable city design, since cities built on non-renewable resources will face deep recessions, fuel shortages and environmental disasters.

As mayor, you will decide the shape of the city. Every choice will have a chain of cause and effect consequences. Infrastructure systems will interact with each other as your city grows. You will see the connectivity of many factors: pollution of groundwater and downwind air pollution, unemployment, economy, population growth, waste management, parks and recreation, crime, homelessness, health, resource depletion, public transportation, bike-only streets, lane-sharing street cars, light rail, commuter rail/heavy cargo lines, traffic congestion, energy-efficient building codes, education, renewable solar and wind energy, non-renewable coal, oil and nuclear energy, the general public, including police officers, doctors and teachers. Players have the ability to add fully curved streets and zones that fit the curved street grid. You will have a greatly diversified tool kit reflecting that of modern urban planners.

Social Flow – Cities are also interconnected with other nearby cities. There is an interchange of commerce and culture between them. What happens in your city will affect your neighbouring city and vice-versa. You cannot live in isolation from one another, since the choices and advancements you make in your city will affect neighbouring cities. Every environmental decision you make, the patterns of development, culture and commerce will impact the other. Cities can trade resources or share public services like garbage collection or health care. They can also pool their wealth and resources to create infrastructure to benefit the entire region, such as a huge solar power plant or international airport.

Zoning – Can be residential, commercial or industrial with 5 different types of road choices each accommodating a different level of density. Rigid grid-based zoning is now a thing of the past.

Mass Transit – You can implement buses, lane-sharing street cars, light rail, commuter rail/heavy cargo lines.

Sims – Individual citizens are called Sims. Health, education, sanitation, employment, housing and crime are some factors affecting their well-being or QOL. Some are healthier than others which is a reflection of lifestyle choices. Police officers, doctors and teachers are also among their component. Sims will show their approval support or their protest disapproval of you as a reflection of your decisions which affect them. For example, placing a high-density residential neighbourhood downwind from a polluting coal power plant will increase Sims’ mortality rate.

You will have a lot to think about which will sharpen your problem-solving skills as an urban planner facing the pressure of your city to expand with social, economic, health and environmental challenges to face.

Fate of the World

Lets players try to save the planet by deciding how they will respond to climate change, population increase, resource depletion and deteriorating ecosystems.

fate-of-the-world

Play Fate of the World

Players have the future of the world placed in their hands with the responsibility of having to decide how the planet will respond to major challenges, such as: climate change, growing population, resource depletion and deteriorating ecosystems. You are faced with a number of scenarios which are based on scientific research.

You will be in charge of the leadership of a fictional international organization, the Global Environmental Organization (GEO), with the responsibility of managing the problems that threaten mankind’s future. Nations throughout the world have funded and authorized the GEO to deal with the crisis of threatened security and environmental instability. As a result, the planet is warming, and resources are depleting. Fate of the World lets you try out different strategies and work out solutions to the world’s problems.

Each turn represents 5 years, commencing approximately 2020. The final date will be determined by the scenarios you become involved in. Your goal is to solve the crisis presented by each scenario, working through issues such as: natural disasters, foreign diplomacy, clandestine operations and technological breakthroughs, while simultaneously satisfying the food and energy needs of an ever-expanding world population. You will face floods, flash fires, storms, global resource wars, famine, political backlash, instability and upheaval. Can you fix the planet, or will you destroy it?

Cards – Policies are in the form of cards and represent a range of actions, from: specific energy sources to quality-of-life. Players choose policies to fund each turn of the game which is represented by cards which need to be distributed and balanced.

Bulletin Notice – Each region has its own bulletin notice showing concerns that the people or government have, which taken into consideration will help influence the policies you decide to enact.

Scenarios – You will face numerous scenarios involving oil shortages which can result in recession, austerity protests, lack of rainfall resulting in famine and wildfires, global carbon trading schemes, land use and forestry programmes, nuclear power, renewable energy.

Agents – At every turn you can recruit agents to help you to enact one area-specific policy per turn in their area of residence. Regions have their own agents. You must decide the best decision choice with the agents and cards you have.

Funds – Players spend funds to recruit agents in regions and play cards in the regions that represent policy decisions which influence how the world will be developing. Some policies will require an office card to be played in the region beforehand, whereas others become available as a result of policies enacted, or in response to a crisis. Cards cost money, and each year a policy is in progress money can be taken from your funds which are contributed from the GDP of regions where you are supported.

Remember, that low support in a region can result in being banned from the region and losing funding contributions.

Solutions – might depend on international aid, species protection, geo-engineering, clandestine operations.

Information – is provided about energy demand, health, emissions, transportation attitudes and demographics, etc.

Geo Support Summary – summaries are given for each of the regions: North America, Latin America, Europe, Southern Africa, China, South Seas, Japan and Oceania.

Unlocking New Policies – Players get more policy cards as you develop a region.

Consequences – Every action taken has a consequence which will have a rippling effect as you progress in the game. You might find yourself being blamed for natural disasters like storms, floods and fires if you didn’t have the foresight to mitigate their possibility by having safeguards in place beforehand. War can result if health, education and work programmes were ignored. Finding a sustainable balance between battling climate change and the needs of the planet is very difficult. Raising the HDI (Human Development Index – a composite statistic of 4 tiers of human development: of life expectancy, education and income index used to rank a country’s production) above a certain point in every region is a challenge. Remember to keep a good level of food production in each region.

What the Frack

Players join other stakeholders, including: the energy industry, politicians, environmentalists and the general public, in the controversial fracking debate.

what-the-frack

Play What the Frack

What the Frack is a game about the coming natural gas boom. Hydraulic fracturing or hydrofracturing, which is commonly known as “fracking” involving drilling a deep hole under the earth and injecting water mixed with sand and chemicals under very high pressure in order to break up layers of rock to release petrochemicals.
Players will further prepare you to understand and participate in the controversial debate about fracking, along with scientists, the energy industry, politicians, environmentalists and the general public. You will find out about likely serious drawbacks to this technology, environmental contamination of air and water.

You will be acting as the state government for a region that has recently discovered a large shale oil deposit and natural gas.

Opinion Responses – Players choose from 3 different actions. Each of the actions will get the opinion responses of 2 opposing stakeholders: an environmental advocate and an industry representative which represent the pro and con sides of the debate.

Consequences – As well as receiving responses from the two major stakeholder groups, players will also receive consequences which will impact your score.

Links – Players will obtain links to websites to further learn about the fracking debate issues.

Take Action – A “Take Action” button at the end of the game links you to a “Let Me Google That For You” fracking page to facilitate obtaining further information.

BioHarmonius

BioHarmonius has players working to save two interconnected planets, one of which is unsustainable through environmental degradation, loss of species and biodiversity.

bioharmonius

Play BioHarmonius

Players experience the importance of environmental balance between the manufactured and natural worlds by discovering how nature can inspire healthy sustainable environments, and how both environments need to be in balance.

Players have the challenge of being responsible for the fate of 2 interconnected planets in the same universe: The Manufactured Planet which is on the verge of collapse because of loss of species and biodiversity and pollution and The Natural Planet which cannot be sustainable without environmental changes from its sister planet. One planet’s poor condition will lead to the demise of the others as well unless it can learn from its sister’s example. Players have the challenge of working to save both planets by trying to restore environmental balance.

Scientists from the Manufactured Planet use the process of Bioharmony to integrate the flora and fauna of the Natural Planet into their manufactured machines in their attempt to improve the environment of the planet.

Players have the mission challenge of travelling between the two planets dragging objects back-and-forth between the two in their goal of improving the conditions of both planets. You only have 6 minutes of playing time before judgement is passed on the planets which is communicated as 8 moon cycles in the planets’ universe.

The game has 7 various endings from “bad” where both planets are destroyed, to “good”, “BioHarmonius”, whereby both planets are saved through the integration of nature and machine. Success from your mission culminates in a celebration with music and fireworks. The Manufactured Planet thrives with the Natural Planet by learning biodiversity from nature.

Quest For Oil

Quest For Oil is a free to download simulation game that has you experience the challenges of offshore oil drilling in the North Sea and Qatar.

quest-for-oil

Play Quest For Oil

Quest For Oil, a strategy resource management game by Maersk, a worldwide shipping and oil and gas company, gives players the chance to experience the challenging world of off-shore drilling being on an oil drilling rig in the pursuit of oil in two locations: the North Sea and off Qatar. You will go on a subsurface journey exploring the geographical underground of the oil industry at both locations.

Players will test their analytic skills searching for oil on a seismic map while facing challenges surrounding oil exploration: seismic analysis; reservoir identification; placement of oil drilling wells; setting up and optimizing product, and getting the oil offshore, while being aware that safety is always to be your highest priority.

You will be tested on how precisely you are able to position your drilling equipment while keeping your eye on temperature and pressure before oil is able to be extracted and production can begin. Players will learn about the oil drilling industry, the importance of the seismic phase and the formation of the earth’s different layers. You will have the challenge of trying to beat your digital opponent who is determined to have you lose. Players will learn the importance of the seismic phase – how the earth’s different layers formed and which of the layers might yield oil using this knowledge to beat the opponent.

Players will have 3 main considerations:

Time – which is an unknown factor in reaching your target. You don’t know how much time you have before your opponent achieves his/her goal and is able to beat you. Thus, you will need to act strategically. You can still beat your opponent (even if they have a head-start, so stay calm and focus even if your opponent appears to be ahead),by locating the best reservoirs as well as choosing the right technological set-up and production process methods; scarce resources – you don’t know how much

Oil Fields – each location has oil field licences available with estimated potentials

Money – You start with a fixed amount and will begin investing to get licences, equipment, assets and advice. You are advised to get an understanding of all the costs that are entailed before making a profit yourself, otherwise you will run out of money in the middle of an exploration or production process which could end your mission. You should remember that once you have obtained the maximum number of oil barrels, the money you have accumulated will also count toward your position.

Your assets are your research vessel and helicopter. To fast track quick location of assets use your computer mouse – Left Click to select assets; Right Click for movement of assets, to speed pressure

Tutorials:

You will provide you with important information to become an oil exploration expert. You have 3 experts at your disposal: a seismic lead geologist, a drilling specialist and an oil production engineer available to help you.

Step 1 – Check out the potential map to locate oil field

Step 2 – Use assets to get your preferred oil field

Step 3 – Once at the field, check out the estimated reservoir potential and price.

Step 4 – Check availability and funds.

Step 5 – Buy.

Buying Seismic Data: First – acquire a licence, start exploring, and buy seismic data. Next, become aware of the updated expected potential of the oil reservoir.

Earth Layer and Overview: You will study the layers and characteristics: sandstone, limestone, shale, chalk, salt, volcanoes

Seismic Analysis Help – Remember to call on a specialist by clicking on a specialist and watching a tutorial and video which will help you beat your opponent and improve your seismic analysis data analysis skills.

Oil Production:

  • Choose your production platform and strategy; confirm location and reservoir size
  • Carry out oil production process- unlock oil from rock by injecting water and natural gas – total number of barrels and barrels per minute depends on placement of injection wells
  • Adjust the pressure – faster production = greater attrition within the reservoir, producing fewer barrels; whereas, slower production = less attrition within the reservoir, producing more barrels
  • Choose how to transport the oil to your oil refinery. Although tankers are cheaper than pipelines, you are restricted to 1 oil tanker per production platform

Seismic 3-D Map:

Blue – indicates that players are drilling closer to the surface

Red – indicates drilling deeper in the rock layer; the right amount of water and CO2 injected into the seabed will free the oil.

EnerCities

Enercities is an energy and natural resource game that allows you to build a sustainable city while encountering environmental restrictions.

enercities

Play EnerCities

Players get to create and expand a virtual city which will involve you dealing with energy and environmental issues. You will start with a small village and take on the challenge of building your own metropolis with the goal of keeping your city sustainable while growing it to 200. You must be careful to balance your people, planet and profit by carefully managing your natural resources and wisely spending your money.

While playing, you will be thinking about energy-related implications, such as: energy consumption, energy savings, and renewable energy. You will be aware of the significance of energy in urban city society, and individual households. Players will find themselves challenging their energy attitudes, behaviour and problem-solving skills while dealing with pollution, energy shortages, energy reduction plans and renewable energy projects, etc.

As you play, you will have to consider: energy balance, cash reserve, natural resources, population, economy, environment and well-being (quality-of-life). You will have limited oil and natural gas resources which cannot be renewed. If you don’t constantly upgrade buildings to be energy efficient, you will run out of these resources.

The game has 5 levels, beginning with a simple suburban pot and light industrial buildings, then expanding to heavy industry, commercial district, forests, urban district and new energy buildings. The 4th level finds players unlocking powerful super structures, such as the nuclear fusion plant. At each level you can upgrade with innovations, reducing fossil fuel use.

As soon as you begin the game, you will likely find yourself making upgrades for City Hall involving implementing city-wide policies, such as: CO2 taxes, an electric car grid, an energy education program, an eco-tourism program and a sustainable technology fund.

Players will start out with 1,000 units of oil and natural gas, and might then find themselves constructing a wind turbine farm to provide clean renewable electricity. After that, you might want to build your first suburban home. You will likely then witness your oil and natural gas start to deplete and decide to solve that problem by improving insulation and adding solar panels to put a halt to your depletion of oil and natural gas resources.

From then, players will have the option to build a light industry, a park and a market. Finally, as you do more upgrades and add new units you will unlock new features, other upgrades for homes, such as: rainwater storage, energy efficient light bulbs, improved insulation and bus stops to encourage public transportation.
