Quest For Oil, a strategy resource management game by Maersk, a worldwide shipping and oil and gas company, gives players the chance to experience the challenging world of off-shore drilling being on an oil drilling rig in the pursuit of oil in two locations: the North Sea and off Qatar. You will go on a subsurface journey exploring the geographical underground of the oil industry at both locations.

Players will test their analytic skills searching for oil on a seismic map while facing challenges surrounding oil exploration: seismic analysis; reservoir identification; placement of oil drilling wells; setting up and optimizing product, and getting the oil offshore, while being aware that safety is always to be your highest priority.

You will be tested on how precisely you are able to position your drilling equipment while keeping your eye on temperature and pressure before oil is able to be extracted and production can begin. Players will learn about the oil drilling industry, the importance of the seismic phase and the formation of the earth’s different layers. You will have the challenge of trying to beat your digital opponent who is determined to have you lose. Players will have 3 main considerations:

Time – which is an unknown factor in reaching your target. You don’t know how much time you have before your opponent achieves his/her goal and is able to beat you. Thus, you will need to act strategically. You can still beat your opponent (even if they have a head-start, so stay calm and focus even if your opponent appears to be ahead),by locating the best reservoirs as well as choosing the right technological set-up and production process methods; scarce resources – you don’t know how much

Oil Fields – each location has oil field licences available with estimated potentials

Money – You start with a fixed amount and will begin investing to get licences, equipment, assets and advice. You are advised to get an understanding of all the costs that are entailed before making a profit yourself, otherwise you will run out of money in the middle of an exploration or production process which could end your mission. You should remember that once you have obtained the maximum number of oil barrels, the money you have accumulated will also count toward your position.

Buying Seismic Data: First – acquire a licence, start exploring, and buy seismic data. Next, become aware of the updated expected potential of the oil reservoir.

Oil Production:

  • Choose your production platform and strategy; confirm location and reservoir size

  • Adjust the pressure – faster production = greater attrition within the reservoir, producing fewer barrels; whereas, slower production = less attrition within the reservoir, producing more barrels
  • Choose how to transport the oil to your oil refinery. Although tankers are cheaper than pipelines, you are restricted to 1 oil tanker per production platform

Enercities is an energy and natural resource game that allows you to build a sustainable city while encountering environmental restrictions.

Players get to create and expand a virtual city which will involve you dealing with energy and environmental issues. You will start with a small village and take on the challenge of building your own metropolis with the goal of keeping your city sustainable while growing it to 200. You must be careful to balance your people, planet and profit by carefully managing your natural resources and wisely spending your money.

While playing, you will be thinking about energy-related implications, such as: energy consumption, energy savings, and renewable energy. You will be aware of the significance of energy in urban city society, and individual households. Players will find themselves challenging their energy attitudes, behaviour and problem-solving skills while dealing with pollution, energy shortages, energy reduction plans and renewable energy projects, etc.

As you play, you will have to consider: energy balance, cash reserve, natural resources, population, economy, environment and well-being (quality-of-life). You will have limited oil and natural gas resources which cannot be renewed. If you don’t constantly upgrade buildings to be energy efficient, you will run out of these resources.

The game has 5 levels, beginning with a simple suburban pot and light industrial buildings, then expanding to heavy industry, commercial district, forests, urban district and new energy buildings. The 4th level finds players unlocking powerful super structures, such as the nuclear fusion plant. At each level you can upgrade with innovations, reducing fossil fuel use.

As soon as you begin the game, you will likely find yourself making upgrades for City Hall involving implementing city-wide policies, such as: CO2 taxes, an electric car grid, an energy education program, an eco-tourism program and a sustainable technology fund.

Players will start out with 1,000 units of oil and natural gas, and might then find themselves constructing a wind turbine farm to provide clean renewable electricity. You will have to connect windmills to transformers by building power lines. Make sure to avoid building windmills near populated areas, or you will have to pay a higher amount each month to offset the political damage.

Windfall is a windmill game that provides a good example of wind energy NIMBYism (Not in My Backyard Syndrome). NIMBYism is one of the leading reasons why wind farms are not gaining the momentum that they should. People overlook this fact and assume that the conventional industries such as coal and nuclear are suppressing wind energy.

In the Oil God game, you can change the political system of any country. Democratic countries avoid war and will not trade with totalitarian governments. Imperialist countries will be very aggressive and will not trade with theocracies. Totalitarian countries will have higher taxation and slower disaster recovery. Theocracies will be more susceptible to unrest when at war.

In Energy City, you will work through a selection of 6 cities, each has its own energy detail variations and challenges, as you play a 10-year normal play, or a 20-year expert play. Watch out for, and observe the important 3 meters displayed on the top of your screen, providing you details about you city’s: local air quality; environmental impact and budget. These meters will gauge the energy choices you make for your city. Your budget keeps your city viable, so you will need to attempt to achieve balance between financial and environmental components.

Players in Energy City will learn how to most effectively deliver energy to each city. Delivering energy to you city entails clicking on power plants to draw energy from them; however, remember that each time you utilize a power source, you are making a statement about your city’s energy portfolio, so understand the implications before you make your selections. You will get a summary and have the option of obtaining a printout of your accomplishments.

If you fail to meet the energy quota, Energy City will end. For best results, experiment with as many different cities and energy strategies as you can. To win Energy City players must power their city and prevent the metrics from bottoming out. Evaluation data and feedback will be provided at the end of each term and each game. The Energy Strategies screen focuses on the areas of: research; development and upgrades

Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) programs mitigate environmental impact. Research must be conducted before new energy technologies can be used. At times you will be upgrading existing facilities instead of building new, which takes 1 turn to complete; up to 3 turns for building new facilities.

The game gives you the option to learn more about the technologies you select (i.e. fuel cell technology; biofuel; solar panels; photovoltaic (PV) panels; green rooftops). You’ll get recommendations from various stakeholders. If you follow their advice you will be rewarded. Stakeholders have a vested interest in your city. Each stakeholder group has  specific energy and environmental needs. Click on the various groups, and carefully listen to their concerns as they offer valuable insights. The health and environmental impacts of pollution (i.e. combustion of coal-releasing particulate matter and atmospheric gasses) will be stressed as you manage your cities. You will be engaging conservation strategies to mitigate the affects of the impact of certain energy choices.

Choices/Options can be researched as you play, from energy technology education provided in Energy City:

Non-renewable – coal power; natural gas resources; nuclear resources that have been around for decades and are the predominant existing infrastructure

Renewable – coming from resources that can be recovered within a lifetime (i.e. biofuels, plants; cell technology; biofuel power plants

Inexhaustible – wind farms; hydroelectric resources; solar resources which draw from the limitless energy of the sun; nevertheless, they require money and infrastructure changes

Conservation – residential PV (photovoltaic) Panels; commercial PV panels green rooftops

Watch the oil addiction gauge – starting at 30%, low, then watch it change as a measure of how addicted the country is to oil. Oil Demand is depicted in the demand and supply bar. Maximum Extraction is gauged – you want the supply to match the demand, and not exceed it.

As time goes on the natural tendency is for politics to become “green” as Environmentalism takes popularity. As that happens, a non-political interventionism approach (laissez-faire politics) will lead to a decrease in oil addiction as Environmentalism takes roots.

You start off in a town by the coast, with a population of 10,000 people, and $400. You have two main indicators: electricity, and environment, which are both neutral when you start. The game map is small, only 25 squares. You have 5 squares each side, to work with, but you can develop, on every piece of land. What are your priorities? Do you want a big population, or do you want environmental protection.? How you play the game depends on your values.

The interesting part in the game, unlike the real world, is that you get to decide whether you want a nuclear power plant in you backyard or something cleaner such as a windmill. You don’t need a large population to win, but if you want, you can have a few million people or more.

When you go to the town, you have several choices. Go to the town, and you have nine options to choose from: efficiency education, solar panels, efficient light bulbs, household insulation, micro-wind turbines, gas heating, everyone in bed by 8, ban all television, and no growth. Click on land by a river, and you have options to build a coal power plant, gas plant, hydro plant, nuclear plant, or campground. Click on an empty field, and you have the option of planting a forest, or prospecting for resources. You can also build a farm, airstrip, paper mill, rich farmland, aluminium smelter, stadium, or amusement park. Go to the hills, and you get to build windmills. Up in the mountains you can build a ski resort.

When you click on any area of development you will get some statistics that will help you make decisions. For example, a wind farm might generate 32 MW per turn. It will cost $100 to run, pollute 1 point, and reduce tourism by 3 points per turn. An undisturbed forest increases tourism by 2 points, and cleans up pollution, but you can also log it for money.
